The movement was initiated by leader Kim Jong Il when he went round the Pyongyang City light industrial goods exhibition on August 3, Juche 73 (1984).

It is a mass movement to produce more consumer goods by making effective use of untapped reserves in reliance on the creativity of popular masses.

Production units for August 3 consumer goods across the country are concentrating their efforts on boosting the quality of goods.

In particular, housewives' workteams are playing a big role in developing the movement. They are producing good-quality consumer goods including foodstuffs and sundry goods made with agricultural products, natural materials and others and selling them at direct sales shops.

As part of the efforts to develop the movement, exhibitions of new products have been held on a regular basis.

Now in Pyongyang, a national exhibition of August 3 consumer goods opened at the People's Palace of Culture is drawing a large number of visitors.
