Protest Strike Staged in S. Korea

Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- The April 16 people's sit-in strike was staged at Kwanghwamun plaza in Seoul on August 12 to demand the probe into the truth about the ferry Sewol disaster and punishment of those responsible for it, according to Chamsesang, an internet paper of south Korea. Present there were workers, university professors, religionists, lawyers, university students, high school students, bereaved families of Ryongsan disaster and opposition party officials, 416 in all. A press conference was held that day. Then a press release was read out. It said that they would stage actions together with bereaved families at Kwanghwamun plaza till the day when a special law with the independent rights to investigate and indict those responsible for the disaster is instituted. It demanded the "National Assembly" immediately come out for renegotiations and the "government" make a decision to institute a special law. It noted that they would stage a people's strike till August 16, hold demonstrations and candlelight rallies, a 10 million-people signature campaign and other actions in different parts of Seoul in demand of the institution of a special law on probing the truth about the disaster. |
