After Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule, the young Koreans of all social standings rallied themselves around the Democratic Youth League of North Korea (at that time), a mass youth organization, under the slogan "Patriotic Youths, Unite under the Banner of Democracy!" advanced by President Kim Il Sung.

They devoted their efforts and wisdom to building a new country and laid down their lives unhesitatingly to defend the country in the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953).

After the war the youth of the DPRK took the lead in the postwar reconstruction and worked great feats in every period of the revolution and construction. They finished the Haeju-Hasong railway project in 75 days as well as the construction of Ichon-Sepho railway section in time.

Leader Kim Jong Il attached importance to the youth affairs and encouraged the young people to perform admirable feats for the country and the nation, putting forth such slogans as "Let Us Become Reliable Young Vanguard Faithful to the Workers' Party of Korea!" and "Love the Young People!".

Encouraged by his deep trust, the young people built a number of monumental edifices including the Youth Hero Motorway.

On January 26, Juche 101 (2012), Marshal Kim Jong Un sent the young people his autographic letter reading "Prosperous Tomorrow Will be Brought Earlier by Dynamic Footsteps of Youth. Always Straight Forward, Following the Party!" to encourage them to fully display the dignity of the great Paektusan nation.

Inspired by this letter, the young people in the country have taken the lead in creating the Korean speed in scientific researches, sports activities and all other fields.

They are now playing an important role in building a thriving nation under the deep care and trust of the Workers' Party of Korea and the leader.
