At first snatch he easily lifted 147 kg, the record he set in 16th Asian games. Although this was 2 kg more than the one set by other players, he set about setting a new record.

At second and third snatches he lifted 152 and 154 kg, setting new Asian and world records.

At first jerk he lifted 170kg. He also succeeded in lifting 174 and 178 kg at the successive events, renewing the record (327kg) he set in the 2012 London Olympic Games by lifting 328 and 332 kg in total points.

Meanwhile, DPRK judoists bagged bronze medals; Hong Kuk Hyon (man) in 73kg, Kim Sol Mi (woman) in 48kg and Ri Hyo Sun (woman) in 57kg category respectively.
