The symposium is to be held on the theme "Korean linguistics, literature and history." Dozens of valuable papers will be presented at the symposium.

Present at the opening ceremony were Thae Hyong Chol, president of Kim Il Sung University who is concurrently minister of Higher Education, and officials, teachers and researchers of the university.

Also present were a delegation of National University of Mongolia, delegation of People's University of China and other delegations and delegates of various universities of China, delegation of the Yanbian Education Publishing House of China, delegate of University of Paris 7, Russian experts in Korean language, delegate of Berlin Free University of Germany and a delegation of Korean University of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan.

Sin Yong Ho, rector of the College of Literature of Kim Il Sung University, said in an opening address that the symposium would offer the participants an opportunity to widely exchange successes, experience and views they have gained in the study of the advantages of written and spoken Korean language and literary legacies and its long history.

He expressed the expectation that the symposium which would help deepen understanding of the DPRK heading for an advanced and highly civilized country would be a significant meeting for boosting the friendly relations among scholars of different countries on a new higher stage.

Congratulatory speeches were made.

Speakers said they were pleased to gather at one place regardless of differing ideas and systems and hold the symposium on the Korean linguistics, literary legacies and history.

They expressed the belief that the symposium would make a positive contribution to the work for social progress and prosperity through the symposium.

Meanwhile, Kim Il Sung University hosted a reception at Okryu Restaurant Tuesday in honor of the participants in the symposium.
