Pyongyang, October 3 (KCNA) -- Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 227-A.D. 668), founded by King Tongmyong as the first feudal state in Ancient Korea, was known to be a powerful military power in the East. It encouraged its inhabitants to master such martial arts as horse-riding, archery and swordsmanship and gave priority to the military qualification in appointing functionaries. The kingdom also boasted of developed economy, including agriculture, handicraft and stockbreeding, and culture. In particular, its medicine, metal processing and ceramic skills were worthy to be proud of. Lots of Koguryo tomb mural paintings were listed as world cultural heritages. After the fall of Koguryo, Palhae emerged as its successor. Its birth was declared by Tea Jo Yong in Tongmosan (China's Dunhua at present) in 698 after his father, a commander of Koguryo, founded Jinguk in 684 when he continued the struggle to drive out the foreign occupationists. Palhae (698-926) came to fame as a thriving country in the East that inherited Koguryo Kingdom in every aspect. It made a rapid progress in political, economic, military and cultural aspects. The dynasty exercised an independent sovereignty in its interests while directing big efforts to the strengthening of defence capabilities with several hundred thousand troops maintained. The people of Palhae were possessed of superb martial art. After retaking the old territory of Koguryo, Palhae developed trade with other countries. Its ceramics and fur products were regarded as treasures in those countries. |
