Four Loyal Commanders in Imjin Patriotic War

Pyongyang, October 20 (KCNA) -- Among patriotic commanders emerged during the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598) were four commanders who distinguished themselves in the war by organizing volunteers' corps to beat back the Japanese invaders. They were Kwak Jae U, Ko Kyong Myong, Kim Chon Il and Jo Hon. The volunteers' corps led by Kwak Jae U, called "Red-gowned General", had performed great military services in shielding the 80,000 Blocks of Complete Collection of Buddhist Scriptures, one of the nation's treasures kept at Haein Temple. Another corps led by Jo Hon sacrificially recaptured Chongju Castle from the invaders, and another corps led by Ko Kyong Myong in his sixties fought life-or-death battles against the invaders to strike them with terror in Kumsan area. The volunteers' corps led by Kim Chon Il dealt heavy blows to the invaders in the coastal area of Kyonggi Province. |
