Competitions were made in 15 categories of weights (men's eight and women's seven) for a total of 45 gold medals at the championship.

Om Yun Chol of the Amnokgang Sports Team grabbed the first gold medals for the DPRK in men's 56kg weightlifting event and thus became a two-time world champion.

Kim Un Guk of the April 25 Sports Team, who renewed world records at the 17th Asian Games, won three gold medals in men's 62kg while Ryo Un Hui took the first place in women's 69kg snatch, jerk and total.

Besides, Ri Jong Hwa and Kim Kwang Song finished first in women's 58kg and men's 77kg jerk and Kim Un Ju in women's 75kg jerk and total, adding to the number of gold medals for the country.
