Building of Naval Base Protested in S. Korea

Pyongyang, November 20 (KCNA) -- The Society of Kangjong Villagers, the All-Islanders Measure Committee for Checking Jeju Military Base and the Measure Committee for Checking the Building of Jeju Naval Base of south Korea held a press conference outside the puppet National Assembly building on Nov. 18 where they denounced the authorities' building of a naval base.

Speakers at the press conference accused the "government" of mulling squandering a colossal amount of fund for building the Jeju naval base next year, reneging on its promise to the people.

They called for canceling all appropriations for the naval base in the draft budget for 2015.

Recent survey made by the Society and experts of international environment organizations proved that the projects of the military base, a huge breakwater, etc. have seriously damaged ecological environment in the area around the village, they held.

The construction of the naval base will escalate arms race and military confrontation in Northeast Asia, they warned.
