She was born in a poor peasant family in Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province when the Korean people were undergoing misfortune under Japan's military occupation. She embarked upon the road of struggle in her teens to save the destiny of the country and its people.

She joined the Korean People's Revolutionary Army led by General Kim Il Sung in September 1935.

Since then she bravely fought many battles till the liberation of Korea, earning fame as anti-Japanese woman commander.

The greatest of her exploits was that she devotedly protected Kim Il Sung in every fierce battle of the anti-Japanese war.

She fully demonstrated her matchless pluck, superb strategy, marksmanship never missing any target, distinguished bravery and self-sacrificing spirit in the war.

At that time guerillas and people called her "woman commander of guerilla army" and "anti-Japanese war hero" with love and respect and stories telling her military exploits widely spread among them.

Anti-Japanese fighters wrote on barked trees many slogans praising her.
