History: Three Famous Calligraphers of Korea

Pyongyang, December 25 (KCNA) -- Recorded in the Korean history are stories about three famous calligraphers--Kim Saeng, Han Ho and Kim Jong Hui. Kim Saeng of low birth was a typical calligrapher dating back to the middle ages. He began to learn calligraphy in his childhood and had engaged himself in handwriting with brush until he was over eighty. He had lived in a mountain cavern for more than 40 years, getting excellent at such styles of writing as ornamental seal characters, running style and cursive writing and earning fame at home and abroad. His handwriting is characterized by boldness and vigor. Han Ho was a calligrapher of the Feudal Joson Dynasty (1392-1910). He had practiced handwriting skills from his childhood, and his calligraphic works won popularity in other countries including Ming of China (1368-1644). Kim Jong Hui, too, was a famous calligrapher like Han Ho. He was versed in history, astronomy, mechanics, geography and music, while being good at painting and poetry. The then people gave a high appreciation that he was the best in the three aspects--poetry, handwriting and painting. In his lifetime, he wrote a lot of books about basic theory and technique on calligraphy. |
