They underlined the need to remove the danger of war, ease the tension and create a peaceful environment on the Korean peninsula. The U.S. should no longer prod the south Korean authorities into confrontation with fellow countrymen but desist from pursuing an anachronistic hostile policy towards the DPRK and reckless acts of aggression and boldly make a policy switch, they urged. They called upon the countries concerned interested in the Korean issue and the international community to refrain from inciting confrontation between the fellow countrymen and deteriorating the situation and extend support to the positive efforts of the DPRK for improving the inter-Korean relations and reunifying the country. They went on: The north and the south should refrain from seeking confrontation of systems while absolutizing their own ideologies and systems but achieve great national unity true to the principle of By Our Nation Itself to satisfactorily resolve the reunification issue in conformity with the common interests of the nation. The DPRK is ready to have candid discussion on all the problems arising in mending the north-south relations and boldly settle them. It is possible to resume the suspended high-level contacts and hold inter-sector talks if the south Korean authorities are sincere in their stand on improving the inter-Korean relations through dialogue. People from all walks of life in the north and the south should turn out in the general advance for a fresh leap in the reunification movement in the noble idea of great national unity, transcending the differences in ideas, political views and isms this year, 70 years since the national division. An appeal to all Koreans was adopted at the meeting. |
