U.S. Should Work for Detente on Korean Peninsula: News Analyst

Pyongyang, January 23 (KCNA) -- The United States is intentionally aggravating the situation on the Korean Peninsula from the outset of the year. The U.S. Department of State disclosed its intention to continue the joint military exercises with south Korea, refuting as "inappropriate links" and "implicit threat" the DPRK's proposal that it is ready to suspend its nuclear test if the exercises are stopped. As the world public commented, the DPRK's proposal is an expression of goodwill for peaceful solution to the crisis on the Korean Peninsula that has lasted for decades. But the U.S. turned down this proposal though it is well aware that such military exercises for aggression may spoil the atmosphere for dialogue between the north and the south of Korea and push the situation on the Korean Peninsula into an extreme phase. In this regard, a south Korean scholar said: The U.S. does not want the improved inter-Korean relations, from its strategic view. It is because the improvement of inter-Korean relations will lead to the detente in Northeast Asia and the U.S. will find no reason to demand more expense for its military presence from south Korea. In particular, possible peaceful cooperation atmosphere in Northeast Asia will give no pretext for the U.S. to contain China. Media of various countries said that national security is a prerequisite for any country, to say nothing of the DPRK whose sovereignty and right to existence have been extremely infringed for decades due to the unprecedented sanctions and isolation moves by the U.S. The reason why the DPRK takes serious attitude toward the U.S.-south Korea military exercises is that such annual exercises have posed a grave threat to its security, compelling it to have access to nukes, they pointed out. The world public contends that the U.S. should work in a responsible manner for detente and stability on the Korean peninsula. |
