Pyongyang, February 5 (KCNA) -- The Guards 56th Fighter Regiment of the Korean People's Army (KPA) performed distinguished feats in the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953). From the beginning of the war, the regiment gave air support to the KPA ground units advancing southward by employing tactics indicated by President Kim Il Sung. In June Juche 39 (1950), a pilot of the regiment shot down a U.S. "B-29" in the skies of Seoul at a distance of 300 meters. As ordered to support the operation for liberating Taejon City, its pilots downed four "B-29"s and two "F-80"s and destroyed many enemy targets including ammunition trains, making a big contribution to achieving the victory in the operation. The regiment was awarded the title of Guards in July 28, 1950. The regiment shot down seven "F-86"s in the skies of Seoul in June 1953. During the war, it downed or damaged over 90 enemy planes, sank or destroyed 11 warships and destroyed hundreds of vehicles. The regiment produced 5 awardees of the title of the DPRK Hero during the war. |
