Role of DPRK Red Cross Society Increased

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- Today marks World Day of Red Cross and Red Crescent. In this regard, KCNA met Yu Ju Yong, deputy secretary of the C.C., the DPRK Red Cross Society. Yu said: In 2014, the DPRK Red Cross Society enhanced its role in disaster prevention, public medical service and water hygiene. The society has paid big efforts to preventing disasters caused by climate change. It newly established emergency programs and system in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. It organized relief squads of volunteers in the areas easy to be hit by disasters and offered various courses and practical trainings to them. It set up early warning and evacuation system in danger-stricken areas in line with the disaster risk reduction plan in community, while publishing books "Early Warning and Evacuation in Community" and "Volunteers' Manual for Emergency Relief". Meanwhile, the society rendered technical and material assistance to the people, living in areas susceptible to floods and landslides, in cultivating saplings and planting trees. It supplied various kinds of medicines and medical instruments to hospitals in North Phyongan, North Hwanghae and other provinces. It also built and rebuilt water supply and drainage pipes in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and others. |
