Pyongyang, August 7 (KCNA) -- Tennis is encouraged as one of the popular sports events in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Koreans have long enjoyed playing tennis and worked hard for its development. According to historical records, playing this event in Korea began at the end of the 19th century. Tennis was for physical exercise at the beginning and then developed into a sports event in the country, which was popular among youth and students and women. In the 20th century there appeared a Korean Tennis Association (May 1922), even under the harsh colonial rule by the Japanese imperialists, and various tennis games took place in the country. In particular, the all-Korea women tennis tournament was held in 1923 for the first time and it had since continued till 1939 for 17 times. This showed the deep interest of Korean women in tennis. At that time the Korean tennis players displayed the stamina and wisdom of the nation by defeating their Japanese rivals in every tournament. Today the tennis technique develops rapidly in the DPRK thanks to its government's policy of encouraging it. Tennis courts have been provided in various gymnasiums and stadiums and sports parks in Pyongyang and many other parts of the country. |
