Seen on the upper part of the monument where Kimilsungia, flower of the sun, is carved are letters "Kim Il Sung Street".

The monument bore letters "The great H.E. President Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) is the eternal leader of the Korean people and close friend of the Syrian Arab people. Kim Il Sung Street was opened to traffic on April 10, 2002 on the occasion of the 90th birth anniversary of H.E. President Kim Il Sung."

A ceremony of unveiling the monument to Kim Il Sung Street and of naming Kim Il Sung Park took place on the spot on August 31.

Present there were the director of the Higher Education Department of the Regional Leadership of the Baath Arab Socialist Party who doubles as chairman of the Syrian Arab-Korea Friendship Association, the secretary of the Damascus Provincial Committee of the Baath Arab Socialist Party, the first vice-minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the vice-minister of Defence, the chairman of the Revolutionary Youth Union, the vice-governor of Damascus Province and other personages of Syrian political parties, government, military, organizations and media organs and masses, the DPRK ambassador to Syria and his embassy officials.

Speeches were made there.

Jang Myong Ho, DPRK ambassador to Syria, said that the monument was erected in Kim Il Sung Street in the central district of Damascus City and Kim Il Sung Park was newly built, adding that it reflected the boundless reverence of the Syrian people for him.

Fairouz Mousa, director of the Higher Education Department of the Regional Leadership of the Baath Arab Socialist Party, noted that the monument to the street and the park holding the august name of the great man was erected and named. The fact shows well the solidity of the friendly relations between the two countries the foundation of which was provided by former President Hafez Al-Assad and Kim Il Sung and carried forward by President Bashar, he added.

He stressed that the relations would be further boosted in the joint struggle for frustrating the U.S. moves.

The monument was unveiled.

The participants went round the monument and the park.
