UN Has to Be Reformed: Rodong Sinmun

Pyongyang, November 8 (KCNA) -- UN celebrated its 70th founding anniversary on Oct. 24 following the opening of the 70th UN General Assembly on Sept. 15. Humankind, reviewing the 70-year-long history of the UN, presents more urgently the issue of the substantial reform of the UN. Rodong Sinmun Sunday says in an article in this regard: In the past seven decades the UN has failed to properly fulfill its responsibility as an international organization with the mission to safeguard the global peace and security and, furthermore, the UN Security Council has been abused as a means for patronizing and justifying some specified countries' biased and optional assertions and views. Therefore, not a few countries demand a reform of the UN Security Council as it speaks for big powers only. The international community demands the UN reform for the purpose of ensuring impartiality and equality in the settlement of the relevant regional issues and global issues through the increase in the number of members of the council, safeguarding global peace and security and defending justice and truth. This is the principle as well as the essence of the reform. If those countries which are set to misuse the council membership as a means of realizing their selfish purposes or as a throne for their willful acts, they would be useless no matter how many they are. It is of significance for the developing countries to own the membership of the council. Permanent members of the council are by no means elder representatives. They are obliged to be faithful to their missions rather than their rights, keeping in mind the responsibility entrusted by the international community upon them. Only when all the countries including the permanent members of the council work to establish the fair international relations, the UN reform will be successfully carried out and peace and security be ensured in the world. This is the fundamental requirement of the world people. |
