Kim Jong Il sent a letter to the national seminar for marking the 50th anniversary of the Joint Conference of Representatives of Political Parties and Social Organizations in North and South Korea on April 18, Juche 87 (1998). In the letter he clarified the five-point policy for the great national unity by preserving and steadily carrying forward the feats performed by President Kim Il Sung, experience gained by him and the tradition established by him in achieving the great national unity.

The five-point policy for the great national unity clarifies that the great national unity should be strictly based on the principle of national independence, get united under the banner of patriotism and national reunification, improve the inter-Korean relations, oppose domination and interference of outside forces and struggle against the traitors to the nation, the lackeys of outside forces, and calls on all Koreans to visit each other, promote contact and dialogue and boost solidarity and alliance. This policy serves as immortal guidelines fully meeting the realistic requirements of the movement for Korea's reunification which has entered a new historic stage.

The fundamental principle of Korea's reunification indicated by the President and Kim Jong Il remains unchanged, no matter how the situation, conditions and circumstances may change.

Now is the time for all Koreans at home and abroad to intensify the nation-wide struggle to thoroughly foil the moves of the separatist forces at home and abroad by the concerted efforts of the Korean nation and achieve the independent reunification, peace and prosperity, in hearty response to the idea and line of the peerlessly great men of Mt. Paektu on the great national unity.

Difficulties and obstacles are still lying in the way of achieving the country's reunification, but no one can block the struggle of the Koreans to usher in a new era of independent reunification, peace and prosperity by the concerted efforts of all Koreans.
