The bureau is one of the major trading organs in the DPRK for development of light industry and improvement of the people's living standard under the leadership of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il. Operating garment factories across the country, it has played a big role in carrying out the popular policies of the party and state.

Kim Il Sung took such a revolutionary measure as making sure that a new organ was formed to guide the garment trade of the country in a uniform way. He saw to it that the organ conducted production and trade independently and provided raw and other materials and funds for light industry.

Kim Jong Il indicated the principled problems and ways for the development of garment trade and led the bureau to reorganize the work system so that it might serve the purpose of improving the standard of people's living.

The bureau has grown into a huge garment producer with competent technicians and strong production groundwork and a militant and powerful group devotedly carrying out the party's trade policies and light industry policy under the leadership of the party and the leaders over the past four decades.

There took place a meeting to mark the founding anniversary
