He began his Songun leadership in August Juche 49 (1960) with the inspection of the Seoul Ryu Kyong Su Guards 105th Tank Division of the Korean People's Army (KPA).

In the mid-1990s when the DPRK was in difficulties, he safeguarded socialism and displayed the honor of the country to the world with the might of Songun.

Since his inspection of the Dwarf Pine Post on the New Year's Day of 1995, he visited at least 2 490 units of the people's armed forces till the last moment of his life.

Thanks to his Songun leadership, servicepersons were trained for those strong in idea and faith and a-match-for-a-hundred fighters, the KPA was strengthened into an invincible revolutionary Paektusan army and the army-people great unity further consolidated.

Meanwhile, he gave field guidance to many industrial establishments in Jagang, North Phyongan and North and South Hamgyong provinces to turn the Arduous March, the forced march, into that for building a land of bliss.

In particular, he wisely led the underground nuclear test to success and thus demonstrated all over the world the dignity of the DPRK as a full-fledged nuclear weapons state, overcoming difficulties and ordeals with his matchless pluck and revolutionary optimism.

With the approach of the Day of Songun (August 25), the army and people of the DPRK are fully determined to glorify the immortal revolutionary feats Kim Jong Il performed in defending socialism and opening up a new history of prosperity with the might of Songun.
