Ryesonggang Sports Team in DPRK
Pyongyang, August 30 (KCNA) -- The Ryesonggang Sports Team in the DPRK plays a significant role in developing the nation's physical culture.

It is engaged in 15 sports events such as football, marathon, boxing and handball.

This year alone, the team has shown good results in various international and national sports tournaments, Kim Sung Nam, its deputy head, told KCNA.

According to him, its players took many medals and trophies in such national tournaments as Paektusan and Mangyongdae prize sports games.

In particular, a handball player Kim Kwang Ok played a key role in making the DPRK win the IHF Trophy Tournament East and Southeast Asia held in Hong Kong of China in July.

The team was founded in October 1962. Since then, it has bagged 60-odd trophies and more than 5 100 gold, silk and bronze medals. Of them, 180 medals and 16 trophies were snatched in various international tournaments.

Over the years, many athletes and coaches of the team won the national titles of People's Athlete and Merited Athlete.
