Mt. Kumgang, World's Famous Mountain

Pyongyang, September 12 (KCNA) -- Mt. Kumgang in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is well-known to the world for its superb scenery. When climbing Piro Peak of the mountain in September Juche 95 (2006), leader Kim Jong Il expressed admiration at its scenery. Mt. Kumgang with an area of 530 square kilometers is located in some areas of Kosong, Kumgang and Thongchon counties of Kangwon Province. The mountain consists of more than 12,000 peaks the highest of which is Piro Peak with a height of 1 639 meters. The mountain displays picturesque sceneries with high and low peaks, fantastic rocks, deep gorges, falls and ponds, harmonized with seaside and rare trees. It is divided into Outer Kumgang, Inner Kumgang and Sea Kumgang according to its features of regional sceneries. Outer Kumgang is characterized by natural beauty of mountains, Inner Kumgang by beauty of valleys and Sea Kumgang by seaside and lake sceneries. In the mountain there are at least 2,000 species of plants and many animals, birds and fishes. And it has lots of historical relics and sites, including Phyohun Temple and Podok Temple, which give a glimpse of Korean ancestors' wisdom and architectural art. The mountain, which was turned into a cultural resort for the popular masses under the deep care of the peerlessly great persons, has now become one of tourism destinations for the Korean people and foreigners. |
