Nigatu Dagnachew Cherinet, co-chairman of the African regional preparatory committee for the 2017 Meeting Praising the Great Persons of Mt. Paektu, was elected chairman of the remembrance committee.

The committee decided to hold political and cultural events including a remembrance meeting and seminar to praise the revolutionary career and exploits of Kim Jong Il on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of his demise.
