He had conducted energetic ideological and theoretical activities to make public famous works like "Let Us Carry Out the Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung's Instructions For National Reunification" and "Let Us Reunify the Country Independently and Peacefully Through the Great Unity of the Entire Nation" and thus formulated the three principles of national reunification, the ten-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation and the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo, which were advanced by President Kim Il Sung, into the three charters for national reunification.

He saw to it that the monument inscribed with Kim Il Sung's last signature on a document of national reunification was built at Panmunjom and the Monument to the Three Charters for National Reunification in Pyongyang.

He also ushered in the June 15 era of reunification for the first time in the history of national division to open up a broad prospect for the country's reunification.

He provided the historic north-south summits to adopt the June 15 joint declaration, the key spirit of which is "By our nation itself", and the October 4 declaration, a programme for implementing the declaration.

And he had built up an invincible military power, capable of defending the peace on the Korean peninsula and the security of the nation, to fully guarantee the peaceful reunification of the country.

Indeed, leader Kim Jong Il was the loadstar of national reunification who ushered in a new era of independent reunification and laid a firm foundation for it.
