In the DPRK, the Worker-Peasant Red Guards, together with the Korean People's Army, is the revolutionary armed forces of the Workers' Party of Korea which reliably defends the socialist country.

President Kim Il Sung, in his early years, hewed out the unique road of building the revolutionary militia forces, setting a good example.

During the anti-Japanese armed struggle, he advanced an idea that the people mean a state and rear and regular armed forces, formed para-military organizations including red guards and self-defence forces against the Japanese army and created the tradition and experience for building militia forces and establishing all-people defence system.

After liberating Korea through the all-people resistance, he formed militia organizations including the People's Self-defence Forces and firmly consolidated self-defense military capability of the country.

On January 14, Juche 48 (1959), he formed the Worker-Peasant Red Guards (WPRG) and constantly strengthened the militia forces, providing a sure guarantee for defending socialism.

Leader Kim Jong Il worked heart and soul to develop the militia forces during the protracted period of his Songun (military-first) revolutionary leadership.

During his revolutionary activities at Kim Il Sung University, he made public many famous works to prove the validity of Kim Il Sung's policy of arming all the people and upheld his Juche-oriented idea and line of building the militia forces.

And he led the WPRG and other militia forces to successfully carry forward the tradition created in the period of the anti-Japanese armed struggle and took necessary measures ranging from weapons to uniforms and bedclothes.

He guided the WPRG to bolster up its combat capabilities even in the period of the Arduous March, the forced march, and made sure that its might was fully displayed through the military parades held in celebration of the 60th and 63rd anniversaries of the DPRK.

Now, the WPRG is greeting the new heyday of its development under the guidance of respected Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.
