Leuciscus Waleckii, Freshwater Fish, Newly Found in River Chongchon

Pyongyang, January 26 (KCNA) -- Freshwater Leuciscus waleckii was recently found in waters of the River Chongchon in the DPRK, attracting the interests of the academic circles. According to Song Chol Gil, section chief of the Zoology Research Institute under the State Academy of Sciences, this fish ranges from the River Amur of Russia to Rivers Amnok and Tuman of the DPRK. In the Ice Age, the fish ranged in rivers and reservoirs of the northern areas of the DPRK. The discovery of the fish in the River Chongchon is of great significance in the scientific and economic aspects. It is the viewpoint of the academic circles that it seems the fish flow down to waters of this area by natural factor during the period of the construction of the Huichon Power Station. Necessary measures have been taken to protect and increase its numbers. |
