President Kim Il Sung visited the Textbook Compiling Department of the Education Bureau of the Provisional People's Committee of North Korea on November 6, Juche 35 (1946) and took a step of founding a publishing house specializing in translation of advanced sci-tech books and compilation of foreign language textbooks.

Leader Kim Jong Il visited the publishing house several times, advanced the tasks to firmly equip the journalists and editors with the revolutionary idea of the President and the idea of the Party and compile Juche-based textbooks, set March 11, Juche 36 (1947) when the Translation Section was organized in the Textbooks Compilation Department of the Education Bureau of The People's Committee of North Korea as the day of its foundation and led it to bring about innovations in carrying out its revolutionary duty.

Since its foundation, the publishing house has written and compiled at least 1,000 kinds of dictionaries and latest sci-tech books, foreign language textbooks, reference books and books for intellectual development of children for the enforcement of the universal 12-year compulsory education, and published thousands of kinds of translated books.
