Rodong Sinmun Flays GIs for Polluting Environment in South Korea

Pyongyang, April 25 (KCNA) -- There have occurred a lot of the cases of oil leakage from the U.S. military bases in south Korea for the past 25 years. The results of the survey of underground contamination in the U.S. military base in Ryongsan, Seoul made by the south Korean Ministry of Environment showed that benzene exceeded 160 times the tolerance limits. Rodong Sinmun says in a commentary Tuesday in this regard: Findings reveal that the U.S. is regarding south Korea as its dumping ground and the one for disposing of poisonous materials only, being indifferent to the life and security of the south Korean people. The problem of the pollution at the U.S. military base in Ryongsan is no more than a tip of iceberg. The U.S. military bases and their surrounding areas have been contaminated with waste oil, chemical materials, heavy metals, etc. The U.S. imperialists threw away defoliant and other poisonous materials, seriously polluting the environment in south Korea. In 1972 they did not hesitate to secretly dispose of even a nuclear warhead in south Korea. Paddy and non-paddy fields in Phyongthaek, Kunsan and Honam of south Korea became a barren land where even a single blade of grass can not grow due to a large amount of oil and contaminated materials leaked from the U.S. military bases. Rivers Han and Rimjin and other rivers and streams around the U.S. military bases have not long been used as drinking water and inhabitants are dying of cancer and other diseases after drinking the contaminated underground water in these areas. What is more shocking is the fact that the U.S. is pressurizing the south Korean puppet regime into deploying THAAD in south Korea, which negatively affects the health of the people and ecological environment. The way of preventing the pollution of environment and outbreak of a war on the Korean Peninsula and protecting the life and security of the Korean nation is to get the U.S. forces withdrawn from south Korea at an early date, the commentary concludes. |
