Campaign for Preventing Drought Damage Brisk in DPRK
Pyongyang, June 24 (KCNA) -- A brisk campaign is being carried out on a nationwide scale in the DPRK to prevent western coastal granaries from drought damage.

In particular, a long dry spell lingers on in South Hwanghae Province with only 60 mm of average rainfall from April 1 to mid-June, one third of the average yearly precipitation.

Dry weather also holds long in Pyongyang City and North and South Phyongan and North Hwanghae provinces.

According to a meteorologist, it is expected to have sporadic rain in the northern part and western coastal areas of the country till the end of June, but it would not be enough to overcome drought.

Due measures have been taken to prevent the drought damage.

South Hwanghae Province has restored over 11,500 wells, 1,600 water holes, hundreds of tube-wells, tens of underground reservoirs and 1,630 barrages, while tapping thousands of vehicles and small water pumps into flowing paddy fields and spraying foliar nutrients.

The same is true of rural communities in Pyongyang and North Hwanghae Province.

Officials of ministries and national institutions and citizens are also taking part in the campaign to overcome drought.
