Pyongyang, July 13 (KCNA) -- It has been 60 years since the opening of the Songnam Youth Coal Mine, the first coal mine which was named after youth in the DPRK. The coal mine, opened in July Juche 46 (1957), has developed into one of leading coal producers in the country under the deep care of the peerlessly great men. President Kim Il Sung, who had always paid deep attention to the youth work in his lifetime, saw to it that young people played a vanguard role in the development of coal mines, a main thrust in implementing the first five-year plan. He put forward the task and ways to increase the coal production on several occasions, including the conference of activists in the coal-mining industry in the northern zone held in May 1957. And he initiated the development of the Songnam Youth Coal Mine and entrusted the project to the young people. True to his intention, more than 400 young people recommended by youth league organizations in different parts of the country gathered at the Moranbong Theatre in Pyongyang in June that year to vow to carry out the project and an advance party left for Songnam. After getting down to the project from July, they finished laying power-line and building over 100 dwelling houses and hostels in a short span of time. They installed a compressor after cutting a way through a thick forest and started tunneling a large electric-car pit in earnest. And they conducted a high-speed tunneling campaign and thus opened up the Songnam Youth Coal Mine, one of biggest coal mines in the country, in less than one year. Leader Kim Jong Il also put his heart and soul into strengthening the coal mine. He took measures to dispatch discharged soldiers to it and personally named a larch forest, created by its employees, "Songnam-style Forest for Prop Production". Now, its coal miners are striving to greet the Conference of Mallima Frontrunners with more shining labor successes in sky-high spirit after carrying out the first half-yearly quotas ahead of schedule this year under the deep care of respected Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. |
