Pine Forest of Songdowon
Pyongyang, August 18 (KCNA) -- Songdowon, a beauty spot of the world and a beach resort, situated in Kangwon Province, the DPRK is famous for its pine forest.

Songdowon is derived from the pine forest.

700-odd years ago, people of the area transplanted young pine trees in order to prevent sea wind and movement of sand. The trees made thick forest by the beach.

But pine trees were cut down by the Japanese imperialists who occupied Korea in the last century. They dug up even roots to extract turpentine for war supplies.

In the 1950s, the pine forest was severely destroyed again by the U.S. imperialists.

President Kim Il Sung visited Songdowon on several occasions after Korea's liberation and after the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953) and took measures to plant many pine trees by the beach.

Leader Kim Jong Il said old pine trees of Songdowon are more precious treasure of the country than gold and led to take thorough measures for protecting the pine trees.

The area of the pine forest has been expanded by people there who turned out true to the behests of the peerlessly great men. Now, the pine forest adds picturesque to the scenic spot.
