Sanggyong Stone Lantern

Pyongyang, December 6 (KCNA) -- The Sanggyong stone lantern is one of historical remains of Palhae (698-926) that succeeded Koguryo (B.C. 277-A.D. 668). It stands at the site of a temple in Sanggyongryongchonbu, the walled capital city of Palhae, which serves as a precious evidence for the shift in stone lantern culture of Korea.

The Sanggyong stone lantern, expected to be built in the mid-eighth century, is a grand combination of superior architecture and sculptural art.

The stone lantern was 6.3 meters high, but some of its upper parts got lost.

It mainly consisted of four parts--base, prop, fire box and roofing.

It also belongs to the group of the oldest and largest fine stone lanterns in different Asian countries, including Korea, and is considered to have great influence on building stone lanterns and pagodas in Koryo (918-1392) and its neighboring countries.
