Famous Thaechon Lacquer Wares
Pyongyang, January 30 (KCNA) -- Thaechon County in North Phyongan Province of the DPRK is well known over the country for having a large forest of lacquer trees.

Lacquer is a white-grey natural paint that is considered not to be made artificially, and the lacquer produced in Thaechon area is of best quality.

The color of lacquer changes into black or red or brown after being exposed to air. And the hardened lacquer takes a polish when it is rubbed.

The natural and geographical conditions in Thaechon County are favorable for the growth of lacquer trees, as the area has soggy soil with much rainfall.

From long ago, lacquer wares have been popular in Pyongyang and other parts of the country and, in particular, there had been a great demand on lacquer wares produced in Thaechon at home and abroad in the end of the Feudal Joson Dynasty (1392-1910).

Now, the Thaechon-lacquer craft has been further developed, thanks to the policy of the Workers' Party of Korea for the protection of national heritage.
