Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- The nationwide forest restoration campaign is now underway in the DPRK in order to materialize the noble intention of the Workers' Party of Korea to turn all mountains into thickly wooded mountains of treasures and gold. Working people, servicepersons, school youth and children have planted a number of good species of trees like Catalpa ovata and Acer saccharinum on the occasion of the Tree-planting Day (March 2). President Kim Il Sung in his lifetime devoted his all for the prosperity of the country, regarding even a single tree and blade of grass in the country as the precious wealth for the happiness of people. He named yellow horn (Xanthoceras sorbifolia) Kirumbamnamu in Korean and personally cultivated it to acquaint himself with its morphological and biological characteristics and economic value before calling for planting it through a mass movement. He also changed the name of lime tree into Korean as Pithaminnamu (Vitamin tree) and made sure that it was spread in the northern parts of the country to be conducive to the improvement of people's health. When a new species of apricot bred from apricot sapling presented to him by a foreign country was acclimatized, he named it Pyongyang white apricot and personally grew it before passing on its cultivation methods to officials concerned. Now the Pyongyang white apricot grows in different parts of the country except its northern highlands. |
