This was revealed by the May 18 Democratic Movement-related Academy on April 3.

According to it, the military cooked up a document distorting the truth about the Kwangju Popular Uprising ahead of the "National Assembly" hearing in those days.

The document was used by the ultra-right conservative forces for slandering and distorting the uprising.

It said that the motivations of the uprising were the citizens' violent demonstration, rumor and regional sentiments, not the U.S. colonial rule and the repressive policy imposed by the military fascist regime.

Noting that traitor Chun Doo Hwan massively introduced "martial law forces" into Kwangju to burn the city and barbarously massacre uprisers under the backstage manipulation of the U.S., it said this was caused by individual officers and soldiers, not by the order given by the military.

As for the opening of fire, the document said it is hard to blame anyone as it was pursuant to the judgment by the "martial law forces" themselves and that the "martial law" was an inevitable effort to end the social chaos that followed students' demonstration.

The Academy also disclosed that the 511 Research Committee deleted testimonies made by the military fascists who ordered to open fire at the uprisers, forged military data related to the suppression of the uprising and cut down the number of civilians massacred.
