Meeting of Koreans in Japan Marks 70th Anniversary of April 24 Education Struggle
Pyongyang, May 3 (KCNA) -- A meeting of Koreans in Japan was held at the Korean Hall in Tokyo on April 24 to mark the 70th anniversary of the April 24 education struggle.

Present there were Ho Jong Man, chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), Jo Han Ju, chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the Union of Korean Teachers in Japan, Ku Tae Sok, chairman of the Union of Korean Educational Association in Japan, Han Tong Song, president of Korean University, leading officials of central organizations and enterprises, principals of schools at all levels, chairman of education associations, officials of Chongryon in Kanto area and teachers and youths and students.

Vice-Chairman Pae Ik Ju in his report recalled that Koreans in Japan held people's rallies in different parts of Japan and turned out in the struggle to defend national education, enraged by the Japanese authorities' act of delivering the unwarranted announcement of "Treatment of Korean Schools" to governors of all prefectures which urged to shut down independent schools and educate children of Koreans in Japan the same way as was done to Japanese children at the instigation of the U.S. on January 24, 1948.

Through the April 24 education struggle, the Koreans in Japan made such achievements as the acquisition of the corporate body acknowledgement of Korean University and Korean schools, rectification of the discrimination against Koreans such as the right to boarding commuter vehicles, acquisition of the qualifications to take part in official games within Japan and other rights to national education after foiling every move of the Japanese reactionaries to obstruct national education, the reporter noted.

He stressed the need for all the Chongryon officials and the Koreans in Japan to stand against the unprecedented moves to stamp out the national education committed by the Japanese authorities and courageously wage the struggle to foil them by united efforts by carrying forward the spirit of the April 24 education struggle.

Then there was a historical data exhibition to mark the anniversary.

Chongryon officials and Koreans in Japan and students in Kanto and Kinki waged large-scale simultaneous actions denouncing the Japanese authorities' discrimination against Korean schools.
