Protection of Migratory Birds Encouraged in DPRK
Pyongyang, May 14 (KCNA) -- Deep attention has been paid to the protection of migratory birds in the DPRK.

More than 420 species of birds have been listed with migratory birds accounting for 82.6 percent of them, according to a state survey.

The number of migratory bird and wetland reserves is at least 30 out of over 200 nature reserves in the country, covering Mundok County and Tok Islet in South Phyongan Province, Sindo County in North Phyongan Province, Anbyon County in Kangwon Province and other areas along the eastern and western coasts.

Due measures have been taken in those reserves to verify the species of migratory birds and their numbers and protect them.

The Nature Reserve Law of the DPRK was adopted in November Juche 98 (2009) to provide a legal guarantee for further protection of its biodiversity.

International exchange and cooperation also gain momentum.

Last year, the DPRK acceded to the Ramsar Convention and the Partnership for the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

From this year, the second Saturdays of May and October are to be marked as World Migratory Birds Day on the theme of "Unifying Our Voices for Bird Conservation".
