Pyongyang, May 23 (KCNA) -- Migrants sanctuaries in Mundok County of south Phyongan Province and Rason City, the DPRK were registered on the list of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar List) and acceded to the Ramsar Convention adopted in 1971. The Ramsar Convention has 170-odd contracting parties and has promoted the protection of all wetlands and their proper use. According to an official concerned, several occasions of survey proved that the Mundok and Rason migrants sanctuaries are fully qualified for the standard of the Ramsar List. They are rich in biodiversity and have good physiographical positions and conditions favorable for migrants' inhabitation. The Mundok Migrants Sanctuary, registered in 1995, serves as a habitat for not only 22 kinds of water birds which are in danger of extinction worldwide, but many other water birds of several kinds like white-fronted goose amounting to over one percent of their total numbers in the world or East Asia. More than 80 000 water birds of 120-odd kinds like duck and snipe make a stopover in the sanctuary in spring and autumn, in particular. The sanctuary was registered as an East Asian-Australasian Flyway network site in April this year. The Rason Migrants Sanctuary, registered in 1995, also serves as a habitat for at least 30 species of migrants under threatening worldwide and for many other water birds of 15 kinds, including mute swan, accounting for over one percent of their total numbers in the world or the region. The DPRK acceded to the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership in 2017. It has set 30-odd areas along the eastern and western coasts as migratory bird and wetland reserves and taken thorough measures for their protection, thus making positive contributions to the protection of global ecosystem and environment. |
