In impressive July Juche 61 (1972), the July 4 Joint Statement, whose keynote is the three principles of independence, peaceful reunification and great national unity, was made public under the energetic leadership of President Kim Il Sung.

It was a great national historic event that dispelled the dark clouds of division and confrontation and gave all the fellow countrymen optimism and hope for national reunification.

Thanks to the rare wisdom and indefatigable efforts of the President, the three principles of national reunification were advanced. They were a treasured sword helping the Korean nation settle the issue of national reunification by itself in conformity with its demand and basic interests and a sure guarantee for pressing ahead with the national reunification movement along the orbit of independence in any storms and stress.

The President made sure that the three principles were abided by thoroughly despite the manifold hardships in the struggle for national reunification. And he set forth realistic reunification policies based on the principles and united all the fellow countrymen firmly under the banner of independent reunification and great national unity.

It is the greatest feats for the country and nation that he put forward a proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo and the 10-Point Programme of the Great Unity of the Whole Nation for the Reunification of the Country, thus laying a firm foundation for the accomplishment of the cause of national reunification.

Minju Joson also says the adoption of the July 4 Joint Statement was a great victory of the independent and peaceful reunification policy set forth by the President and an epoch-making event that provided a basic cornerstone of inter-Korean ties and the national reunification movement.
