Mt Kumgang Area Registered as World Biosphere Sanctuary
Pyongyang, July 31 (KCNA) -- The area of Mt Kumgang was registered as a world biosphere sanctuary at the 30th meeting of the UNESCO International Coordinating Council of the Man and Biosphere Program held in Indonesia on July 25.

It is the fifth of its kind for the DPRK after the registration of the areas of Mts Paektu, Kuwol, Myohyang and Chilbo.

Mt Kumgang, one of six famous mountains in Korea and a world-renowned one, stands in the middle of the great Paektu range, covering a vast area of Kosong, Kumgang and Thongchon counties of Kangwon Province.

The core and buffer and transition areas were fully set up in the area of Mt Kumgang as a biosphere sanctuary.

The area is of great conservation value for having peculiar natural sceneries and diverse ecosystem comprising over 1 200 species of plants and more than 250 kinds of animals.

And its rich natural, historical and cultural resources are favorable for sustainable usage of biodiversity and multilateral development of local economy.

Thanks to the nature conservation policy of the Workers' Party of Korea, the biodiversity in the area of Mt Kumgang is well conserved.
