Pagoda Architecture with Long History
|
|
Pyongyang, September 19 (KCNA) -- Korea has a long history of pagoda architecture, a precious national cultural heritage. Old pagodas showing the advantageous architecture can be seen in different parts of the country, including Pyongyang. They are divided into those built with stone, wood, brick, etc. and the pagoda architecture is considered to be created and completed in the period of Koguryo (B.C. 277-A.D. 668). Carried in the old book Samgukyusa (History of the Three Kingdoms) is a record of the first pagoda in Korea. At the beginning of pagoda construction, its main building material was wood, but had been gradually replaced with stone. Wooden and stone pagodas consist of platform, tower and top. The first stone pagoda was built in the last period of the Three Kingdoms (early 3rd century B.C.-middle 7th century A.D.). After the period of Koryo (918-1392), a number of stone pagodas had been built in Korea enough to be called stone pagoda country. Typical of them are those at Kumgang and Miruk temples, nine-storeyed pagoda at Hwangryong Temple and the one at Horyuji Temple of Japan. The Korean-style pagoda architecture was registered as a national intangible heritage last year. |
