The university had only several faculties and tens of teachers at first, but has developed into the pedigree establishment for training hard-core backbones of science and technology, the supreme seat of scientific and technical education in the country, with several colleges, tens of faculties and institutes and thousands of teachers and researchers.

The university is closely associated with the feats performed by the peerlessly great men in its foundation and development.

Though everything was in need after the country's liberation from Japan's colonial rule, President Kim Il Sung initiated and wisely led its foundation to establish its predecessor Pyongyang College of Technology in September Juche 37 (1948).

In the periods of the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953) and postwar reconstruction, he took measures to enable its teachers and researchers to continue the educational work and scientific research. And thereafter he visited the university several times to clearly indicate the orientations and ways to be followed by it.

Chairman Kim Jong Il gave field guidance to the university on several occasions since his first visit to it in the late 1950s and gave important teachings.

Early in January 2006 he went round the newly-built e-library and gymnasium of the university, calling for making a great leap forward in training sci-tech talents as befits the pioneer of IT revolution.

Today, the university is making great contributions to the development of national science and technology and economic construction, true to the noble intention of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.

Over the past 70 years after its foundation, the university has produced over 100 awardees of the titles of DPRK Hero and Labor Hero and a large number of winners of the titles of People's Scientist and Merited Scientist and holders of academic degrees.

The university significantly celebrated its 70th birthday some days ago.
