Mud Bath Therapy

Pyongyang, October 1 (KCNA) -- The Sijungho (Lake Sijung) Sanatorium in Thongchon County, Kangwon Province of the DPRK is well known for treatment by mud baths. The Lake Sijung is a lagoon covering an area of 2.94 square kilometers with 4-5 meters-thick mud at its bed. It was in 1955-1956 that the mud was discovered and analyzed for the first time. Thereafter, the mud has served as one of precious natural resources for medical treatment. It has dark grey color and no smell. The mud at Lake Sijung is efficacious for arthritis, liver diseases, chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, chronic colitis, aftereffects of trauma and operation, nervous system disorders, gynecopathy, etc. The treatment methods include whole body bath, topical bath and bath accompanied by electrotherapy, ultrasonic therapy and phototherapy. The mud is usually heated to 42-50 degrees Celsius for bath, but can be used intact. It is good to have bath for 20-25 minutes once a day or every two days, 12-15 times in total. The mud at the lake has been supplied to sanatoriums and hospitals in different parts of the country. The mud bath therapy was registered as a national intangible heritage last year. |
