Sword Dance, Korean Folk Dance with Long History
Pyongyang, October 23 (KCNA) -- Sword dance has been handed down from ancient times in Korea.

Circumstanced as the sword was an important weapon in wars and conflicts, courageous and vigorous sword dance came to be widespread as an expression of joy of triumph or in the hope of victory in war.

Originally, it was a single-sword dance, but developed into two-sword dance and sword masked dance in the period of the Three Kingdoms (early 3rd century B.C.-middle 7th century A.D.).

Judging from folk dances of Koryo (918-1392) inclusive of sword dances like "Jochon Dance", it can be proved that the sword dance was popular even in the period of Koryo.

The movements of sword dance had been put on a more diversified and artistic basis in the period of the Feudal Joson Dynasty (1392-1910).

Today, the National Folk Art Troupe has further developed the proper rhythmic movements of the sword dance in keeping with modern aesthetic beauty.
