Second Quadruple World Champion Produced in DPRK

Pyongyang, November 7 (KCNA) -- Om Yun Chol, a weightlifter of the DPRK, won the championship in men's 55kg category at the 2018 World Weightlifting Championship of the International Weightlifting Federation. He placed first in snatch, jerk and total, bagging three gold medals. After all, he became the second quadruple world champion of the DPRK, following Kye Sun Hui who gained fame as world women's judo star. Om took three consecutive wins in men's 56 kg category of the World Weightlifting Championships held in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In particular, he renewed his world record (170kg) set at the 17th Asian Games by jerking 171 kg at the 2015 World Weightlifting Championship. He also took the first place at the 30th Olympic Games and set a new Olympic record by jerking 168kg, thrice as heavy as his body. He won gold medals at the 2013 Asian Weightlifting Championship, the 17th and 18th Asian Games, the 2013 Asian Cup and Interclub Junior and Senior Weightlifting Championship and the 29th Summer Universiad and a silver medal at the 31st Olympic Games. |
