Kim is to lead a DPRK team attending the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. The team, belonging to Group E, will compete with Saudi Arabian, Qatari and Lebanese rivals.

He, as a midfielder, contributed to winning the qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the victory at the International Tournament for the Vietnam Football Association Cup in 2010.

After finishing his career as a footballer, he had worked as a coach and chief coach of the men's football team at the Pyongyang Sports Team. He was active as assistant coach of the DPRK's U-16, U-17 and U-23 men's football teams in 2013-2017.
