Pyongyang, December 20 (KCNA) -- Scientists and technicians of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have made a number of sci-tech achievements this year to propel the country's economic development. In cooperation with various units, the State Academy of Sciences introduced an oxygen-based pulverized coal firing technology into thermal power plants to make it possible to put electric-power production on a normal basis without using heavy oil and established a computer integrated manufacturing suited to the requirements of medicine production and quality control standard. And it made equipment necessary for the substrate production and seed selection and sowing processes at tree nurseries. It also developed such hi-tech equipment and facilities as an optical fiber laser cutting machine and a new-type multifunctional paper machine and settled a lot of technological problems arising in rubber and soap industries, fish farming and stockbreeding. Educational and scientific institutions including Kim Il Sung University, Kim Chaek University of Technology, the Institute of Coal and the Academy of Agricultural Science developed lost foam casting process facilities, a power geographic information system for national integrated power control and a new-type water pump powered by wind energy and a rice combine. Members of the February 17 Shock Brigade of Scientists and Technicians active at the Pukchang Thermal Power Complex made contribution to the increased power output by developing PLC installations, real-time assay system and disperse control system needed for putting the boiler systems on an automatic basis. They also established a coal-based iron-making process at Kim Chaek and Hwanghae iron and steel complexes to provide a technological guarantee for increased steel production. Technicians of the Kumsong Tractor Factory and the Sungri Motor Complex, together with scientists of various units, completed hundreds of technical innovation plans and designed and manufactured new jigs and tools to carry out the assignment for production of tractors and motor vehicles. Meanwhile, many festivals, exhibitions and public discussions were held this year to spread new sci-tech achievements and encourage a hot sci-tech emulation throughout the country. All the achievements demonstrate the validity and vitality of the Workers' Party of Korea's policy of prioritizing science and technology. |
