From olden times the Korean nation has considered ever-green pine tree as a symbol of firm faith, showing such mind in poems, pictures, legends and proverbs.

This is well evidenced by a lot of cultural heritages.

In Ryongsan-ri of Ryokpho District, Pyongyang there are seven mural tombs dating back to Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 688). Displayed at two of them are mural paintings showing pine trees.

Sol Ko, a famous painter in the period of the Three Kingdoms (early 3rd century B.C.-middle 7th century A.D.), gave a vivid description of several hundred years-old pine tree to show the nation's love for it.

Big pine trees are also seen at colorfully painted Paeksang Pavilion in Anju City of South Phyongan Province, which is called one of the eight scenic spots in the northwestern part of Korea, and main hall of Ryangchon Temple in Kowon County of South Hamgyong Province.

Song Sam Mun, registered in Korean history as a talented scholar of the 15th century, showed his unshakable principles, writing a poem on pine tree before being punished with death.

Yun Son Do, a famous poet in the 17th century, expressed his firm life belief in a poem by likening it to pine tree as well as water, rock, moon and bamboo.

Ri Sang Jwa, one of the three famous painters in the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), well represented the Korean nation's strong will and stamina in his masterpiece "Walking under Pine Tree at Moonlit Night".
