Rodong Sinmun Slams U.S.-S. Korea Negotiations on Upkeep of U.S. Forces
Pyongyang, February 20 (KCNA) -- Shortly ago, the south Korean authorities and the U.S. finished the negotiations for the conclusion of the 10th "special agreement on sharing the expenses for the upkeep of the U.S. forces" and initialed the agreement in Seoul. According to it, they agreed to increase the expenses by 8.2 percent over the last year. Its term of validity is one year as demanded by the U.S.

Rodong Sinmun Wednesday discloses in a commentary that the conclusion of the 10th "special agreement on sharing the expenses for the upkeep of the U.S. forces" is a product of U.S. pressure on south Korea and the latter's submission to it.

The commentary says that the U.S. forces in south Korea are using a great amount of tax under the pretext of the "expenses for the upkeep" every year and are not spending them all.

It goes on:

The trend for peace is being created on the Korean peninsula thanks to the proactive efforts of the DPRK, and the measures are being taken to ease the military tensions between the north and south.

Given the fact, how can we then understand a huge increase in the expenses for the upkeep of the U.S. forces in south Korea.

It is not accidental that organizations and personages of all walks of life in south Korea urge the south Korean authorities to open negotiations again without delay while condemning the recent conclusion of the "special agreement on sharing the expenses for the upkeep of the U.S. forces" as an act going against peace era.

No wonder the south Korean people turn out in the struggle for the repeal of the agreement while blasting it as the humiliating one and laying bare the U.S. move to take a large volume of tax under the pretext of "alliance".
